Job Description:

To grow a culture of discipleship in young families at The Billabong and lead programs and equip the members of the church for effective ministry to young families in the Canning Vale community and beyond.

Key responsibilities

  1. Develop and lead our children’s ministry, gathering together and working alongside our volunteers, co-ordinating rosters and equipping leaders through discipleship, training and mentoring. Delivery of children’s Sunday programs up to once per fortnight.

  2. Develop and build family networks within The Billabong, co-ordinating programs to assist parents in the discipleship of their children and equip other volunteers to lead and run effective Christian programs for young families.

  3. Ensure strong links between The Billabong Vision and Mission and existing outward facing programs such as the Playgroup and Amplify (youth group), ensuring the Leadership Team remain aware of the direction and needs of these programs and that such programs are adequately resourced.

  4. Actively participate in Sunday Celebrations, particularly elements such as the ‘family-time’, children-inclusive prayers, communion and testimonies.

This is a part time role (number of hours/days per week flexible).

The Leadership Team and Congregation would anticipate the following:

The position holder will:

  1. Work from The Billabong Community Centre at all paid work times aside from pastoral meetings/events off site or as agreed by the Leadership Team;

  2. Provide the leadership team with a monthly report on progress of activities outlined in the role responsibilities (once per month);

  3. Become actively involved in the community life of the congregation through partipication in a life group and the community activities of The Billabong.

  4. Not work/study/volunteer any more than a total of 5 days per week between this role and any other job or study load, so as to allow one full day off (Sabbath) after involvement in the life of the congregation (ie. worship, life group, community activities).

  5. Meet with the ministry/pastoral team (Minister and other pastors/ministry workers) once per week and attend other meetings as required from time-to-time;

  6. Work closely alongside the leaders of other ministries to young people (eg. Playgroup, Youth Group) to ensure smooth transitions as children grow up in the church;

  7. Allow the spirit to guide them and the LT in identifying opportunities and setting priorities that may change from time to time.

Core competencies

The Position Holder:

  1. Is of high character and displays maturity as a follower of Jesus.

  2. Has strong communication and organisational skills, is proactive and demonstrates an ability to achieve positive outcomes.

  3. Demonstrates and agrees with the vision, mission and core values of The Billabong, as expressed by the Minister and Leadership Team, and accepts the polity and practices of the Uniting Church according to its regulations and Basis of Union. 

  4. Is able to clearly articulate their faith and theology (Christology, Ecclesiology, Missiology and Eschatology);

  5. (Desirable) Holds a minimum Cert IV or Diploma level in Christian ministry, or equivalent training and experience in Christian ministry;

  6. Has a passion for children and families becoming disciples of Jesus and parents being equipped to disciple their children;

  7. Has a clear vision (and ideally experience) in developing relationships with families and young children, has experience of working with children (and families) and a proven capability in building networks.
